Great, you spotted a cockroach. One cockroach may not be so bad, but if there’s one, there’s usually several more — you just don’t see them all because they’re nocturnal and great at hiding.
Cockroaches are stealthy and stubborn and a little infestation can quickly worsen in just a matter of days. Whether you’re a business owner or homeowner, it’s important to know when to call a cockroach exterminator, before your problem gets out of hand.
Indications of a Cockroach Problem
Identifying a cockroach infestation as early as possible is the best way to help control the spread of these disgusting pests. The more time that passes, the more difficult and costly it is to eliminate them. Other than seeing a cockroach for yourself, here are some other common indications you may have a cockroach problem.
- Oily, musty odor: cockroaches let off an oily, musty odor that only gets stronger, the larger an infestation grows.
- Cockroach droppings: small roaches leave droppings that are about the size of ground pepper or ground coffee, while larger sized cockroaches leave larger sized droppings. Check behind your appliances, on countertops, in cupboards, and beneath sinks.
- Egg casings: female cockroaches produce egg casings called, oothecae which can hold dozens of eggs inside. It’s light brown and about a quarter-inch in length. Some species will leave these casings in a humid and warm environment like your kitchen or bathroom, while others will carry them until they hatch.

Can I Eliminate Cockroaches Myself?
We understand it’s very tempting and affordable to try DIY pest control methods or use store-bought products. But, keep in mind, cockroaches are very difficult to eliminate. In fact, a cockroach can live without its head for a week because it breathes through holes in its body and not its head. It really only dies out of thirst. Cockroaches have even been able to survive nuclear testing sites. And you’ll also want to keep in mind pesticides are poisonous and can be harmful to people if inhaled. Only a trained and licensed pest control technician should handle these products.
Professional Cockroach Exterminators
A single female cockroach can produce anywhere between 300 to 400 offspring in her one year of life and they don’t need a mate to reproduce. So it really only takes one of these pests to cause an infestation to spread.
